General Motors 5.3L Engines
General Motors ever popular 5.3L active fuel management was used in majority of trucks and SUV's from 2007-2014. This was one of GM's first designs utilizing cylinder deactivation and active fuel management. LC9, LY5, LC9, LH6 and LMG were the most popular engine codes for this V8 5.3L.
This design was subject to many issues, however the aluminum block seems to have a much higher failure rate than the iron block. You can tell which design you have by the 8th digit of the VIN. Codes 0 and J were the iron block design, while codes E, 3, 7, and M were the aluminum block design.
Both engines are subject to having the very common problem of "ticking" lifters. These Active Fuel Management Lifters (AFM) were prone to both ticking and causing excess oil consumption. That’s why all of our remanufactured engines come with upgraded lifters that fix both of these pesky issues.
General Motors also released updated valve covers and an updated AFM valve that address oil consumption issues. TSB 10-06-01-008F details the parts required and how it addresses the issues. Go Powertrains 5.3 engine fixes the AFM valve and comes with a new oil pan and timing cover. We highly recommend purchasing the updated valve cover which runs in price from $85-$129 depending on model year.
Cylinder deactivation and active fuel management technology was intended to increase fuel economy on these V8 engines but they are the weakest link in the engine. For an upgrade we have a remanufactured 5.3 with non D.O.D lifters meaning it will not shut down to four cylinders for fuel economy. This engine paired with our plug in tuner keeps this V8 running in 8 cylinder mode 100 percent of the time.
Staying within a 5k mile oil change and synthetic oil is imperative in keeping your engine running strong for years to come. Contact us today 540-830-0286 to give life back to your Silverado / Suburban/ Sierra / Yukon / Tahoe / Denali 5.3L V8 engine!
