Chrysler Hemi 6.1L Engine
The Chrysler 6.1L is a V8 engine that belongs to a class of engines trademarked as Hemi’s. There are many different versions of the hemi engine, but from 2005-2010 the 6.1L was the flagship performance engine for Chrysler products. Chrysler used it in applications Branded with their SRT badge including the Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The engine comes in at 369 cubic inches with a bore and stroke of 103mm X 90.9mm and produces 425hp and 420 lb ft of torque. The block of a 6.1 is slightly different from that of the 5.7L. It uses redesigned cooling channels and oil sprayers to cool the pistons. It comes with a forged crankshaft, and lightweight pistons to increase durability. The 6.1 does not use the MDS system or variable length technology in the intake manifold.
One of the known issues with 6.1L engines was exhaust valves breaking. It was identified that exhaust valves with a green stripe were prone to breaking in some cases with less than 20,000 miles on the vehicle. The issues were taken care of by Chrysler under warranty. To remedy the issue Chrysler changed manufactures of the exhaust spring which was noted most often with a blue or yellow stripe.
