What Does a Transmission Replacement Actually Cost?
Sep 3 2026
The unit price is the number everyone compares, and it is the smaller half of the answer. What decides the real cost is labour, the core, and whether the job comes back. Here is how the arithmetic works, from the supply side.
In this post, Go Powertrain will show you some things to take into consideration when facing a transmission replacement.
The Four Numbers in a Transmission Job
-
The Unit. Varies enormously by application — a common half-ton six-speed and a heavy-duty diesel unit are not the same conversation.
-
Labour. Typically eight to fourteen book hours depending on the vehicle, whether it is four-wheel drive, and how much has to come out.
-
The Core. Charged up front, refunded when the old unit comes back. It is a deposit, not a cost — but it affects the invoice the customer sees.
-
The Cooler and Lines. If the failure put metal through the system, these have to be flushed or replaced. Skipping it is the most common cause of a repeat failure.
Why the Cheapest Unit Often is Not
Two transmissions, a few hundred dollars apart. The cheaper one carries the manufacturer's warranty: three years, 100,000 miles, and $50 an hour of labour if it fails. Ours carries three years, unlimited mileage, and $90 an hour.
On a ten-hour job, that is $500 versus $900 coming back to you on a comeback. The gap is usually larger than the difference in what you paid for the unit. That means the cheaper transmission stops being cheaper the first time one comes back.
You do not have to take our word for that. Multiply your own book rate by the labour hours on the job in front of you.

When Not to Replace At All
A fair number of transmission complaints are not transmission failures. Shudder at light throttle is often the torque converter. Harsh or delayed shifts are frequently fluid condition or a control module that needs relearning. Both are far cheaper than a replacement, and both get misdiagnosed regularly.
We would rather tell you that than sell you a unit you did not need. A shop that trusts our diagnosis is worth more to us than one transmission.
What Drives the Price Up
-
Four-wheel drive — more labour, sometimes a transfer case in the way
-
Diesel applications — heavier units, higher cost, longer jobs
-
Low-volume applications — fewer cores in circulation
-
Contamination — cooler, lines and sometimes the radiator on top of the unit
