If you own a 3500, 4500, or 5500 and are looking for a built transmission to last the long haul we have the right product for you! If you want to know some specs and history of the AS68RC just read below:
The Aisin AS68RC is a six-speed automatic transmission designed and developed to work with the 6.7L Cummins Diesel. It is predominantly used in applications ranging from 3500-5500 Dodge cab and chassis trucks starting in 2007, and some tilt trucks such as the Isuzu NPR and the Mitsubishi Fuso. The transmission was designed and manufactured by Aisin Seiki and Borg Warner. The name given to the transmission can be broken down in meaning to mean: AS-Aisin-Seiki, 6-6 forward gears, 8-relative measure of the torque capacity on a 0-9 scale, R-rear wheel drive, c-commercial vehicle.
The AS68RC Uses three drive clutches, two brake clutches, a one-way sprag clutch, and three planetary gear assemblies. The transmission performs clutch to clutch gear changes from 2nd to 6th gear to allow for engine braking. In order to maximize towing capability and engine braking, the AS68RC tow haul mode locks out 6th gear, then quickens closed throttle downshifts for improved speed reduction. The vehicle is allowed to shift into 5th gear as long as it maintains a constant speed. The Overdrive off locks out both 5th and6th gears, when it is off the vehicle will resume normal function on the next engine cycle.
The AS68RC uses a gear ration of 3.74:1 in 1st, 1.96:1 in 2nd, 1.34:1 in 3rd, 1.00:1 in 4th, 0.77:1 in 5th, 0.63:1 in 6th, and 3.54:1 in Reverse. It has a maximum torque rating of 730 lb ft, and a Gross combined weight ratio of 26,000 pounds. It is recommended to used wither Mopar ASRC fluid or Mobile full synthetic ATF for optimum performance.
Known issues with the AS68RC are with the torque convertor. There was a design flaw with the unit that caused the torque convertor stator shaft to reverse direction and cause the convertor to overheat. The issues also caused problems in the lubrication system and K2 clutch. In order to remedy this issue we use a clutch material that prevents the convertor from unwantedly changing directions. Starting in 2014 Dodge began replacing the AS68RC with the AS69RC. The two units are almost identical with the only difference being in the 1st and 2nd gear ratio and torque rating.
